THE WINERY – BODEGAS GÓMEZ NEVADO

Following the tradition of our ancestors, we see the vineyard as a way of life.

Our history

According to the land registry “Catastro de la Ensenada” [a land and industrial census conducted by King Ferdinand’s minister Marquis Ensenada in the 18th century], our family has been involved in the cultivation of vines and the production of wine in Villaviciosa since 1754. We have kept this dedication, care and respect through the years, preserving the traditional methods, which is reflected in our wines.

Villaviciosa de Córdoba

Villaviciosa originated from the confluence of two main crossroads: the shorter way to connect Toledo with Seville, and the road connecting Córdoba and Badajoz –originally a Roman path. The village is located in the north of the province of Córdoba, in the heart of Sierra Morena. It is surrounded by up to 800-metre-high mountains, which alternate with a variety of crop fields: cork oaks, holm oaks, stone pine groves, olive groves and vineyards.

The Climate

The climate is warm in the area. Its summer is characterized by dry and sunny days – reaching up to 40º C– and cool nights –registering 15º C. Winters are rainy and wet, with cold temperatures, oscillating between 11ºC and 0ºC.

Our Soils

Our vineyard is surrounded by soft slopes. Its soil is composed of loose white slate, known as “tosca” in the area. This soil is rich in nutrients and microorganisms, and creates a healthy and fertile community or ecosystem, where herbicides and insecticides have never been used.

The Vineyard

TThe vines have been globet-pruned since their plantation in 1920. The vineyard was planted with the local variety known as Arís, and with Palomino Fino (Jerezana and Sanluqueña), influenced by Jerez. There are 1 500 vines per hectare in the traditional, staggered pattern, which enables tilling from different directions.

The vineyard hasn’t been restructured, though some faded plants have been replaced with the variety Pedro Ximénez. This is the estimation nowadays: 40% Arís, 30% Palomino and 30% Pedro Ximénez.
